Manuel DeLanda: ISM ISM
Book release screening
Anthology Film Archives, New York
Nine short films by Manuel DeLanda
Delanda in person at screening!
SALIVA DILDO – PREMATURE EJACULATORS (1976, 2 min, 16mm-to-digital. Digitized with support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Special thanks to M. Henry Jones.)
A recently rediscovered fragment from an early film, featuring regular DeLanda collaborator M. Henry Jones navigating time-warped NYC sidewalks.
ISM ISM (1979, 8 min, Super 8mm-to-16mm. Preserved with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.)
“ISM ISM documents my graffiti activities in New York. The film was originally made as a class project for P. Adams Sitney. It has the form of a manifesto against the orthopedic power of language.” –Manuel DeLanda
ANONYMOUS MULTITUDES (2015, 8 min, digital)
DeLanda takes on the NYC masses, deforming faces and stretching moving figures in strange and disorienting ways.
HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED (1982, 14 min, Super 8mm-to-16mm-to digital. Digitized by Anthology Film Archives with support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.)
A dynamic and demented city symphony, HARMFUL takes the extreme techniques of DeLanda’s earlier films and unleashes them on the businessmen and denizens of NYC. Outlandish and truly unforgettable, this film premiered in a slightly neutered version at the 1982 New York Film Festival, where it elicited many loud hisses and boos. Anthology’s new digital restoration features the recently rediscovered original edit.
THE SUPER 8 SHOW: BEYOND HOME MOVIES (1981, 7-min excerpt, U-Matic videotape-to-digital. Produced by John Sanborn and Kit Fitzgerald for WNET/New York.)
Manuel DeLanda discusses his Super 8mm filmmaking in this rare video interview originally produced for WNET in connection with J. Hoberman’s 1981 Anthology screening series, “Home Made Movies: 20 Years of American 8mm and Super-8 films.”
FRACTURED LANDSCAPES (2014, 12 min, digital)
Through digital layering and animating masks DeLanda creates a dissonant kaleidoscopic urban symphony, bending, mirroring, and distorting New York’s unique architectural surroundings.
JUDGEMENT DAY (1983, 8 min, Super 8mm-to-16mm. Preserved with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.)
Cockroaches meet their maker in the first installment of DeLanda’s incomplete “Jerry Falwell trilogy.”
ELECTRIC ARTHROPODS (2017, 3 min, digital. Theatrical premiere!)
DeLanda revisits the horror of insects in macro, electrically colorized among animated particle backgrounds.
TWISTED FLESH (2018, 3 min, digital. Theatrical premiere!)
A “battle” between complex image processing and pornography. Will porno always win?
Total running time: ca. 70 min.

Where To Score: The Happening
Corner of Haight and Ashbury, San Francisco
Your search begins at the mythical crossroads of the hippie movement, where “the editors” await with instructions at high noon. From there, follow your nose through a neighborhood thick with spirited smells, scoring not just the new book (priced right), but all manner of goodies inspired by its colorful contents. Skip church. It’s a scavenger hunt.

DESPITE WHAT YOU MIGHT’A HEARD, I LIKE PEOPLE
with Darin Mickey and Jason Fulford
Darin Mickey’s new book of photographs, Death Takes a Holiday represents a middle-aged man restlessly clinging to his youth and the hope of finding that elusive artifact to make anxiety subside and keep the reaper at bay. He shows us a community of recluses brought together by obsession and a pure love of music. This presentation will focus on Val Shively, owner of R&B Records in Upper Darby, PA. Val is one of the world’s experts and biggest collectors of 1950s vocal group 45s. Mickey and Fulford will play a selection of Val’s rare 45s along with an audio interview and photographs, both vintage and new. Presented by J&L Books.

Panel Discussion: Kippenberger in America
On the occasion of the publication of Susanne Kippenberger’s book, Kippenberger: The Artist and his Families, (J&L Books, 2012), the Austrian Cultural Forum and J&L Books present a panel discussion on the artist Martin Kippenberger's legacy and influence in the United States.
Martin Kippenberger (photo by Elfie Semotan) had mixed feelings about the US. "To have an exhibition in America, I guess you have reached some sort of goal in that!" he said. In fact, during his lifetime he had solo exhibitions at the Hirschhorn and SFMOMA, while no German museum would show his work. The Museum of Modern Art in New York owns more Kippenbergers than all the museums in Germany put together. On the other hand, his humor and political incorrectness were not always well received in the US. Crowds at Los Angeles parties would disperse when Kippenberger would start one of his hour-long jokes. According to Martin, Americans would “slurp down one hamburger after another but not have any spaghetti bolognese, because they’re healthy.”
Whether in America or Europe, Martin Kippenberger was a polarizing figure. Since his death, he has become a major influence on a new generation of artists around the world. Peter Pakesch, Ann Temkin, and John Miller will discuss American and European perspectives on Martin Kippenberger and his work. The event will be moderated by Robert Storr.
PARTICIPANTS:
John Miller (American artist based in New York City and Berlin)
Peter Pakesch (Director: Universalmuseum Joanneum)
Ann Temkin (Chief Curator, Dept. of Painting and Sculpture, MoMA)
Moderator: Robert Storr (Dean, Yale School of Art)

DAVID REINFURT

this and other mystical mathematics via a short overhead projector
lecture.
ERNEST HEMINGWAY & LEANNE SHAPTON
Audio: In the 1950’s, A.E. Hotchner met up with Ernest
Hemingway in Cuba, and recorded this synopsis of a story,
In Harry’s Bar in Venice, onto an old Webster wire recorder.
It is one of the few rare recordings of Hemingway’s voice.
Visual: In 2008, Departures Magazine sent Leanne Shapton
to Venice, Italy to make drawings of famous writers’ haunts
in the city. Included are the hangouts of Lord Byron, Henry
James, Daphne du Maurier, Ernest Hemingway, John Ruskin,
Ezra Pound, George Sand, Mark Twain, Thomas Mann, and
Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. This is a sneak preview
of the drawings. (They have not yet been published.)
CORIN HEWITT
Corin will provide us with a package for unwrapping. The inside
and the outside will join as we follow its unveiling. We will need
an audience volunteer for this one.
ANDREW LAMPERT
Melinda Shopsin presents Andrew Lampert in the latter’s absence,
a short subject or two taken from life projected in slow motion with
sound separate.
ADAM STERNBERGH
Adam will improvise a short story based on a photograph he sees
for the first time in his life.
HARRELL FLETCHER
Beau Travail (excerpt), by Claire Denis, 1999.
Jason, I’d like you to show the final scene in Claire Denis’ film
Beau Travail. It’s my favorite dance in a film. On a side note, I saw
Denis Lavant (the actor doing the dancing) walking down a street in
Paris once, but he was sort of dressed like a homeless person, which
a friend of mine there said is how he always dresses, I guess to avoid
drawing attention. I wanted to tell him how much I liked his dance,
but I didn’t since I’m sure he hears that sort of thing all the time,
though you never know maybe he was having a moment of doubt
and would have appreciated the encouragement.
